The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have ran out of superlatives to describe their side’s performances so far this season, but their imperious form so far could rise to new heights next season with one huge signing.
Pep Guardiola struggled to enjoy the success he has become accustomed to during his managerial career during his debut season as City manager, however, his struggles from last season have become a distant memory this season. Guardiola managed to transform the fortunes of his club by almost completely overhauling the squad during the summer of 2017 in which he allowed almost a dozen first-team players to depart the club.
City also welcomed Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Ederson, Bernardo Silva and Danilo to the club in the same period, and although their squad is now only 22-man strong, it stands out as the strongest in the league. The recipe for success for Guardiola has been quality over quantity, especially considering Walker and Ederson have been the only two of City’s summer signings to firmly cement their place in the first-team.
The rate of City’s progression this season strongly suggests that they could rapidly become one of, if not the best team in world football, but that will only be possible if Guardiola manages to secure the signing of one of the world’s most devastating attacking players, namely Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.
Hazard (valued at £90 million by Transfermarkt) is the missing piece of the proverbial jigsaw that City need to land if they wish to become the dominating force in world football that their Chief Executive Ferran Soriano so desperately wants them to become.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Chelsea will refuse to sell Hazard to City even for a world record fee, but that should not deter City’s interest as recent transfer sagas have served to remind the football world that players hold more power than clubs in the modern era.
City’s attacking line-up is currently at a near-perfect level with the likes of Sane, Sterling and Aguero all doing their bit to terrorise Premier League defences on a weekly basis, however, the signing of Hazard would enable City to find an extra gear and instigate a new era of dominance in world football.
