The rumour mill has begun to come off its hinges of late but this one really takes the biscuit.
Rumour has begun circulating that West Ham are planning an audacious £15million bid for Man City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips, Michael Johnson and Roque Santa Cruz come January. The Hammers also hope to land defender Wayne Bridge on loan as well.
West Ham hope to pay for the lot using monies earned from the sale of Carlton Cole in January. The ex-Chelsea player has a £10million asking price and is said to be heading to Liverpool in a done deal. Sources suggest that the West Ham board are resigned to making up any difference in a desperate attempt to stay in the Premier League.
Shaun Wright-Phillips has become surplus to requirements at Eastlands and could leave for as little as £3.5million. A similar fate has fallen to Johnson and Santa Cruz, who could leave for £5million and £6million respectively.
Midfielder, Johnson, has struggled with injuries and appears to have fallen down the pecking order despite returning to training a few months ago. Despite this, the 22-year-old is still thought highly of in Manchester and many fans will be sad to see him leave.
Santa Cruz has also been frustrated at his lack of opportunities since his big money move to Manchester. West Ham, who need a goalscorer, will feel he can fill the void left by Carlton Cole. However, the Hammers will face stiff competition from former club, Blackburn Rovers, in a race for his signature. Blackburn are desperate for another striker in the window and many Rovers fans still idolise the Paraguayan International.
In the mean time the Daily Mail are also reporting that Wayne Bridge is set to join the Hammers on loan come January to aid them in their relegation scrap. City are looking to relieve some of his £90k p/w from the wage bill and West Ham would be willing to pay nearly half.
Sound crazy or what? But desperate times bring desperate measures and if the Hammers don’t act in January they could be in real trouble.
Perhaps this is the real Man City mutiny? That said, I’m sure Messrs Wright-Phillips, Santa Cruz and Johnson will be hoping they aren’t jumping to a sinking ship just yet. I can’t wait for the new year.
