Our Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait for their side to get going in the transfer window as they are expecting some big signings once it opens for business.
It’s been a tough first season for Pep Guardiola at the club with him seeing his side produce some magical attacking football and pretty shoddy defensive displays.
What needs to happen, then, is that the club signs some players to even up the balance and whilst the defence will obviously need work there is a real suggestion that the club needs more steel in the middle of the park.
Yaya Toure is getting on in years, of course, and Fernandinho – the closest thing City have to a box-to-box player – has his limitations which, in the Premier League, at least, is an issue.
Of course, Guardiola feels that he can pass his way around the physicality of the league and he may still be proven right but the evidence at the moment is that there is a need for substance to complement the style.
Step forward, then, Atalanta star Franck Kessie.
It’s a pretty widely held belief that Ivorian midfielder Kessie has become one of the most sought-after young midfielders in the game.
He gets about the pitch fantastically well and can both defend and attack – leading to comparisons with the aforementioned Toure.
He’s young enough to adapt his playing style to Pep’s wishes, though, crucially, which is unlike anyone else at the club and we think if City were to add his power to the already established panache, they’d take some stopping in 2017/18.
