Manchester City have made a perfect start to the defence of their Premier League title.
The Citizens kicked off their season against Arsenal and goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva handed Pep Guardiola the perfect start to the campaign. Huddersfield were next, and a Sergio Aguero hat-trick quickly put the Terriers to the sword. They face Championship winners, Wolves, in their next fixture.
An injury has rocked Guardiola’s plans after number two goalkeeper – Claudio Bravo – was sidelined for the foreseeable future. The Chilean was replaced by Ederson Moraes last summer but remained a valuable player as City lifted the Carabao Cup. City are without a backup goalkeeper after Bravo suffered an achilles tendon injury.
To bolster their squad, City must apply for special dispensation from the Premier League and launch an emergency loan bid for Real Madrid shot-stopper – Keylor Navas. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the Costa Rica international was a key player for the Whites during their three consecutive Champions League triumphs. However, he is no longer their number one following the arrival of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea.
Guardiola would likely use Navas in the cup competitions, and the increase in football could prove tempting. Whether City would be given dispensation remains to be seen as they currently have youngster Daniel Grimshaw on their books; he is yet to make his professional debut at the club. If they do, moving for Navas makes perfect sense.
