Manchester City supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side reach 100 points for the Premier League season courtesy of a 1-0 win over Southampton on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men had already broken the points record, among others, prior to their trip to the South Coast on the final weekend of the campaign, yet they had the chance to become the first top-flight side to reach three figures in a single season. And they did just that late on at St Mary’s thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ 17th goal of the campaign, thus taking their tally to exactly 100 from their 38 Premier League games to underline their domination of the top-flight this season.
As such, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, and indeed what business their side may seek to do to improve next time round.
And one man who could be on his way to the Etihad Stadium is Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, as per recent reports from The Daily Mirror, in a move which would no doubt enhance the Citizens’ Champions League chances next term.
Ultimately, it was a disappointing campaign in Europe’s elite competition for the North West outfit, who succumbed to fellow Premier League side Liverpool 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, thus leaving their best effort at the semi-final they reached under Manuel Pellegrini back in 2016.
And with Guardiola the man the City hierarchy have brought in to win them the Champions League, they will be expecting better next time round, and bringing Maguire in would certainly bolster their hopes.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a wonderful debut season at Leicester this time round and has at the same time earned himself a place in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man England squad for the World Cup – in fact, the Foxes defender is a likely starter for the Three Lions in Russia.
And that’s because Maguire is just as adept with the ball as he is without it, as he is able to mix the defensive traits of making tackles and blocks with an ability to bring the ball out of defence and launch attacks – traits Guardiola wants to see from his defenders.
And with Vincent Kompany another year older and concerns still raised regarding his fitness, Eliaquim Mangala almost certainly on his way out, and indeed John Stones’ own struggles for regular football in the second half of the campaign, the City chief may well be on the lookout for another young centre back in a bid to improve his backline – Maguire’s arrival would do just that.
Yes, it might not necessarily be the most exciting of signings, but there’s little doubting that adding another centre back option to the squad, not least one that appears to play the way Guardiola desires, would significantly benefit City next season.
In fact, landing the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) would serve to enhance their Champions League ambitions for the 2018/19 season.
