Manchester City supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team reach 100 Premier League points courtesy of a last-gasp win at Southampton on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men went into their final day clash on the South Coast having broken several records over the course of the campaign, yet still searching to become the first side to reach the three-figure milestone. They looked set to be frustrated by Mark Hughes’ Southampton, but Gabriel Jesus’ brilliant late goal sealed a 32nd league win of the campaign to take the Citizens to 100 points for the season, finishing 19 clear of second place Manchester United.
Consequently, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern throughout the campaign, and they are likely to be further thrilled by recent comments from striker Sergio Aguero, who has all but banished any doubts about him leaving the club this season.
In fact, the Argentine’s revelations may well be the best news the Citizens supporters lining up at the bar have heard so far this summer, what with the striker hugely influential in their domination of the Premier League this term.
Remember, it was only little over 12 months ago whereby the future of Aguero was in huge doubt following the arrival of Jesus, who for the most part kept the 29-year-old out of the starting eleven after signing from Palmeiras in January.
However, Guardiola and the City faithful must have been thrilled to retain the Argentine’s services as Aguero produced one of his best seasons for the club to date in netting 30 goals in just 39 appearances, only his tally of 33 last term and 32 back in 2015 were better.
Significantly though, given City weren’t able to make the necessary strides in Europe this season, having lost to Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, they absolutely need to keep the Argentina international, as it would be remarkably difficult for Jesus, regardless of how talented he is, to lead the line on all fronts all season next term.
The Brazilian youngster did manage 17 goals for the Premier League champions this season, but on the whole Aguero has been the main man up top in Guardiola’s side – losing him would significantly weaken the Citizens.
And with Aguero commenting that he feels pain-free in his knee for the first time in five years, and given the fitness and injury concerns that have disrupted his time at the club, it’s plausible that the striker may be even better next time round, and as such help City finally make the mark in the Champions League.
As such, the 29-year-old’s recent comments are sure to thrill our resident Citizens supporters, to the point that they may well be the best they have heard so far this summer.
