Manchester City: Fans name Vincent Kompany as club’s greatest captain - Manchester City

Plenty of Manchester City fans have named Vincent Kompany as the greatest captain in the club’s history in reaction to an article in The Athletic from Sam Lee.

The journalist, who later tweeted a link to the piece via @SamLee, pondered the question on the one-year anniversary of a memorable contribution from the Belgian defender, namely his long-range thunderbolt against Leicester in last season’s tightly-fought and ultimately successful Premier League title race.

In The Athletic, Lee shortlisted Kompany alongside other illustrious Manchester City captains such as Tony Book, Paul Power and Mike Doyle, but the verdict among numerous fans of the club on social media was that the Belgian topped them all.

The 34-year-old won 12 trophies in 11 years at the Etihad Stadium, including four Premier League titles as the club’s skipper, and signed off his time at the club by leading them to FA Cup final glory against Watford a year ago. Alan Shearer, Franny Lee and Yaya Toure were among those who paid tribute to his greatness when he announced his departure from the club in 2019 (as per mancity.com).
