Lots of Manchester City fans have been reacting to a claim from midfielder Fred, who plays with crosstown rivals United, that he chose to link up with Jose Mourinho in preference to Pep Guardiola, a decision with which many of the Etihad Stadium faithful were relieved.
In an interview with Sky Sports published this morning, the 27-year-old hinted that he had a choice of signing for either of the two managers before electing to work with Mourinho, who signed him for the Old Trafford club in 2018. According to Sky Sports, Guardiola was apparently interested in signing the Brazilian after his performances against City for Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2017/18 Champions League.
Fred revealed: “I was obviously very happy with the interest of some of the best managers in the world. Guardiola is a great manager, but I chose to join another great manager, Mourinho, at United.”
Do you think Fred would have been a good signing for Man City?
While Manchester City went on to defend their Premier League crown in 2018/19, Fred struggled at a United team who finished sixth, scoring just once in 25 games in his first campaign in England. Martin Keown branded his passing ability “a joke” after a defeat to Newcastle last October while Watford’s Troy Deeney admitted that the Hornets targeted him as a weak link when they visited Old Trafford in February.
Following Fred’s interview to Sky Sports, these Manchester City fans on Twitter voiced their relief that he snubbed the Etihad Stadium in favour of a move to United. One supporter mocked that the Brazilian would have been a mere “lemon slicer” for his team-mates’ drinks if he ended up at City:
You didn’t choose we didn’t want you 😂

If City had been daft enough to sign Fred, then his role would’ve been lemon slicer for the halftime drinks. He wouldn’t get anywhere near our squad and that’s why he signed for a club living in the past

Thank god for that, one of the worst players I’ve ever seen play in the premiership

Thank god, he chose Mourinho. 😂 😂
Every midfielder at City is better than him, wouldn’t even made to the bench.
