Among those making a welcome return to the City Football Academy to gear up for the impending restart of the league was Riyad Mahrez, who posted an image from the squad in training during the week.
The image, which was shared on his Instagram profile @riyadmahrez26.7, shows the Algerian and several of his team-mates observing social distancing guidelines while training, a practice to which the 29-year-old alluded in his caption for the post.

The photo of Mahrez and some of his Manchester City colleagues looking quite happy to be back in training, while practising social distancing in order to minimise the risk of coronavirus spreading, is one that could well delight many of the club’s supporters.
The Algerian winger had been enjoying an excellent season at the Etihad Stadium before football ground to a halt in March, racking up nine goals and 14 assists for the campaign so far. The latter figure is second only to Kevin De Bruyne in Pep Guardiola’s squad, which also rings true for the players’ WhoScored match rating averages over the season.

He did not come cheap, becoming Manchester City’s record signing at £60m in 2018, but he has gone a long way to repaying that fee with the contribution of 21 goals and 26 assists in 81 appearances for the club. His match averages of two key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles are the second highest in Guardiola’s squad for both metrics (as per WhoScored), attesting to the attacking influence that he brings to the team.
Mahrez has produced standout performances this season against the likes of West Ham (three assists), Watford (one goal, two assists) and Aston Villa (two goals, one assist), and the sight of him enjoying being back in training should give the Etihad faithful much hope that he can again deliver such stellar displays before long.
