The Manchester City fans have been feeling dejected in the Transfer Tavern this week after their side were dumped out of the Champions League by Liverpool at the quarter-final stage.
Pep Guardiola’s side have captured the imagination of their own supporters and neutrals alike this season with their ability to imperiously dominate fixtures against high calibre opponents whilst consistently attempting to implement an entertaining brand of football. However, City’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Liverpool – a side who are eager to remind the footballing world that they have won Europe’s greatest club competition on 5 separate occasions – served to illuminate their naivety and lack of experience at the top level.
City have plenty of improving to do if they are to return a better and stronger outfit next season and, unless they make a handful of wise decisions during the upcoming summer transfer window, their struggle in Europe could manifest itself once again during the next campaign. With that to consider, Guardiola needs to focus on the areas of his side which are most in need of improvement this summer.
Regardless of the level of success a team enjoys across an entire season, there is always further room for improvement during the following campaign and, City are no exception to that rule. Leroy Sane has been in blistering form for the club on the left-wing this season, but there is a suggestion that the Citizens have become overly dependent on the German gazelle in recent months.
The signing of a new left-winger should be something of a priority this summer in that case and, one man who City should controversially be weighing up a move for is Manchester United’s Anthony Martial. City have not signed or publicly expressed an interest in a Red Devils star since they secured a hugely controversial deal for Carlos Tevez back in 2009, but the time could be right for them to lure another player from the red-half to the blue-half of Manchester.
Martial (valued at £58.5 million by Transfermarkt) has recently rejected the offer of a new contract from Manchester United due to his desire to embark on a new challenge this summer according to French media outlet RMC Sport. And considering the immense level of potential Martial possesses at just 22-years-of-age, Guardiola would be foolish not to make a move for his services this summer.
With Martial’s contract set to expire in the summer of 2019, there’s no doubt that he will be available at a value for money price as he enters the final year on his current deal this summer. The French international would offer City a fresh dynamic on the left-side of their attack with his brilliant ability to cut inside onto his right-foot and offer a different option to what Sane currently provides, so they should do everything they can to sign a future superstar of European football during the summer transfer window.
