Manchester City are believed to be leading the chase for Ajax youngster Sontje Hansen, according to a report from Goal.com.
The report claimed that Juventus, Inter and RB Leipzig are also interested in the 18-year-old but it is the Premier League champions who currently appear to be in pole position for his signature.
Hansen, who helped Netherlands to retain their European Under-17 Championship title last year in Republic of Ireland and then finished as top scorer at the Under-17 World Cup, has reportedly earned plaudits from Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann, who messaged him on social media to praise him. The Ajax teenager is equally adept at playing as a right winger or centre-forward and has impressed for the Amsterdam club’s youth teams this season, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 22 games (as per TransferMarkt). He was given a first team debut just before Christmas and has played twice so far at senior level, although Ajax manager Erik ten Haag has hinted at taking a patient approach to integrating him into the first team.
The reports of Manchester City’s interest in Hansen come amid a claim from RMC Sport [via Sport Witness] that midfielder Claudio Gomes is set for yet another loan move, this time to Ligue 1, after spending the 2019/20 season at PSV Eindhoven. The 19-year-old was signed from Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017 but has made just two senior appearances for the English club totalling five minutes.
While Hansen seems a precocious prospect, he is still highly inexperienced and a move to Manchester City is unlikely to help his career development, if the cases of Gomes and other young players are any barometer.
Marlos Moreno, signed back in 2016, has since been loaned out five times without even featuring in a matchday squad at the Etihad. Manu Garcia was signed by City as a youth player seven years ago but made only four senior appearances for the club before being sold back to his boyhood club Sporting Gijon last summer.
There are numerous case studies to show just how hard it is for young overseas players on Manchester City’s books to break into the first team frame at the Etihad and risk losing several years of their career as a result. That is something that both the club and Hansen should consider before doing a deal.
