Manchester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been revelling in their side’s magnificent 2017/18 season to date, with one trophy already in the bag and two more very possibly following suit come the end of the campaign.
Pep Guardiola’s men secured their first piece of silverware under the Spaniard by lifting the Carabao Cup last month, having beaten Arsenal 3-0 at Wembley in convincing fashion to win the trophy for the third time in five years. And the Citizens will almost certainly add the Premier League title come the end of the campaign, given they are 16 points clear at the summit, and the Champions League is very much in the frame as well having eased into the last eight, although Liverpool will provide a stern challenge in the quarter-finals next month.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Citizens fans in the Tavern throughout the campaign, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can clinch a historic treble this term by going on to win the Premier League and indeed the Champions League.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident City supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they are ‘actively interested’ in signing Jack Wilshere from Arsenal this summer, what with the midfielder’s contract set to expire.
And were the North West outfit to indeed seal a deal for the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), they would surely make it back-to-back Premier League titles next time round.
Ultimately, there is no doubting the quality the 26-year-old possesses in the middle of the park – this is the same player who excelled in games against Barcelona and Brazil in years gone by, and has widely been tipped throughout his career to be the next big-thing in English football.
Clearly, injuries have stunted his progression in that regard, but this term has seen the England international appear more often for Arsene Wenger’s side than any campaign in the last few years, perhaps suggesting that he is beginning to get the better of his recurrent injury problems.
And in a Guardiola side that are technically up there alongside some of the best teams in Europe, Wilshere would be in his element, and playing alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva is only going to accelerate his game to new heights.
Significantly though, the central midfield department is arguably one that needs some strengthening over the summer given that Fernandinho will be 33 in May, and while the Brazil international has been outstanding this term, further reinforcements will need to be viewed in the coming transfer windows.
Arguably, Wilshere is England’s most talented central midfielder when it comes to ability on the ball, and where better to really hone in on that skill than under Guardiola at Man City, who have played some of the best football many have seen in the Premier League era so far this season.
Adding another exceptionally talented midfielder like Wilshere will only serve to strengthen City’s ranks, and given how far ahead of everyone they are this season, landing the 26-year-old during the summer is only to going enhance their chances of making it back-to-back titles next season.
