Manchester City are set to complete the signing of Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo for €30m (£27.5m) plus defender Danilo.
The Guardian report that Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the fullback and that City have been working on a deal to bring the Portuguese international to the Etihad Stadium for several weeks, and a deal between the two clubs was reached over the weekend.
Cancelo signed for Juventus from Valencia only last summer, where the defender played 25 league games for the eventual Serie A champions as the Old Lady retained the Italian league title for the eighth year in a row (per Transfermarkt).
City spent £50m just two summers ago to bring in Kyle Walker from Tottenham (per BBC Sport), but it appears that Pep Guardiola is not completely satisfied with his right-back options heading into the 2019/20 season.
Although the City boss often uses his fullbacks as inverted fullbacks as a team analysis report from Sky Sports News shows with Cancelo often playing as an attacking fullback during his season at Juventus last year, the Portuguese international could be a suitable player in Guardiola’s system.
As Football Bloody Hell state in their scout report of Cancelo, the high press, high intensity of Guardiola’s team is not too far off how Juventus operated last season, and although the Portuguese defender is likely to see a slight change in his role on the pitch, the right-back has the proven skillset to work in City’s well-oiled machine.
For example, with a pass success rate similar to that of Danilo’s (86.2% to 87%), the man he would be replacing in the squad, the former Valencia man has shown he is secure in possession (via WhoScored).
Indeed, with City’s game built on retaining possession (no Premier League team averaged a higher possession average last season), it is an important factor to take into consideration.
Despite breaking their club-record transfer fee to sign Rodri (per BBC Sport), City have been largely quiet in the transfer market this summer, but the signing of Cancelo could be a boost to the squad heading into the new season.
With the Community Shield already under their belt, City could make a real statement of intent by bringing in Cancelo in the final days of the window as Guardiola aims to evolve his Man City team even further.
