Manchester City: Fans impressed with Nigel de Jong’s display in Vincent Kompany’s testimonial

A plethora of former Manchester City players came back to the Etihad Stadium last night for Vincent Kompany’s testimonial in which a Manchester City Legends team took on a Premier League All-Stars line-up.

The match finished 2-2 and, at half-time, Manchester City-focused Twitter channel @SuperbiaProelia asked followers to pick out the players who had impressed them in the first half.

In a Manchester City team that included current players David Silva and Sergio Aguero, along with past Premier League winners such as Joe Hart, Kolo Toure and Pablo Zabaleta, one name which featured regularly in replies was Nigel de Jong.

The 34-year-old Netherlands international, who now plays with Al-Shahania in Qatar, spent three and a half years at the Etihad and was in Manchester City’s first Premier League-winning squad in 2012.

He made 137 appearances for the club, scoring twice, although he was involved in a controversial moment in the 2010 World Cup final when referee Howard Webb later admitted he should have sent off the midfielder for a chest-high challenge on Spain’s Xabi Alonso. [via The Guardian]
