Raheem Sterling has been one of Manchester City’s best players over the last two seasons, playing a key role in their historic Centurions and treble-winning campaigns, but a spat with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has attracted negative press.
Was Southgate right to drop Raheem Sterling?
The 24-year-old reportedly instigated a training ground bust-up between the pair, a mere day after the Reds conquered City at Anfield to take a huge advantage in the title race, with England manager Gareth Southgate opting to make the situation public.
As a result, waves of criticism have hit the City star, with dozens of mixed reviews from pundits and supporters alike over this odd situation.
With his needless actions towards Gomez, arguably, being rightfully punished – Sterling released an apology message on Instagram via City Xtra and explained the incident from his perspective.
In response, City supporters showed their unwavering backing for the Englishman, having watched the young winger guide them to trophies galore under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter:
No need to apologise. Southgate and England have made you a scapegoat. Many times team mates have fought on the training pitch. Go play for Jamaica .. show England your back like they have with you and see how they cope. They don’t deserve you.
