Bayern Munich have ended their pursuit of Manchester City winger Leroy Sane and are now turning their transfer attention elsewhere.
According to Sky Sports News, Sane is due to undergo surgery next week after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in last Sunday’s Community Shield triumph over Liverpool, which has prompted Bayern to cancel their plans to sign the player.
Earlier this week, France Football reported that the 23-year-old Germany international was set to join Bayern in a deal worth €110million (£100.87m), but that deal is now off after his ACL injury.
Earlier this summer, Manchester City had been resolute in their attempts to prevent Sane from going to Bayern, rejecting the Bundesliga club’s player-plus-cash offer for the winger last month, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Sane has been a hugely influential player for the Premier League champions over the last two seasons. In 2018/19, he ended the campaign with 16 goals and 18 assists in 47 appearances, averaging a goal per 2.94 games and an assist every 2.61 games.
He started 25 games in the Premier League and Champions League last season and scored some crucial goals in both tournaments. These included the winner against Liverpool in January, the clincher against Manchester United in April and the winning goal in a hard-fought victory at Watford.
He also came up with a sumptuous free kick in Manchester City’s 3-2 win away to Schalke 04 in February at a time when Guardiola’s men were 2-1 down with just over five minutes to play.
In the 2017/18 campaign, Sane netted 14 goals and supplied 19 assists in 49 appearances, an average of one goal per 3.5 games and an assist every 2.57 games. That season, he started 30 matches in the Premier League and Champions League.
While he did not score as many decisive goals in that campaign, his brace against West Brom in the EFL Cup ensured their passage through Round 3 as they ultimately went on to win the competition, while he also netted a significant goal in a 3-2 Premier League win against the Baggies that season.
Even with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling scoring 78 goals between them last season, Manchester City’s attack is weakened without the contributions of Sane, who came to the fore at key moments in 2018/19.
If there is a sliver of positivity about his lengthy injury absence, though, it is that Bayern have now turned their attention elsewhere and might feel satisfied with the wide players in their squad by the time Sane makes his comeback for Manchester City.
