Pep Guardiola opted to keep his chequebook closed during the January transfer window with his side some way behind Liverpool.
Defeat to Newcastle allowed Jurgen Klopp’s men to extend their lead at the top of the table by one point after lumbering to a draw against Leicester. Guardiola faces a real battle to retain his Premier League crown with a number of difficult fixtures scheduled in the coming weeks. However, the Spaniard resisted the urge to splash out on some new recruits.
City did lose two of their prized assets with Brahim Diaz joining Real Madrid and Rabbi Matondo switching to Schalke. Their sales will give Guardiola even more funds for the summer transfer window where he is expected to spend big. Given Benjamin Mendy’s chequered injury history, more depth on the left side of defence is needed.
The ideal target would be Leicester City left-back – Ben Chilwell. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old is graduate of the club’s youth academy and was tipped for a big role at the club at an early age. His performances did not go unnoticed with Liverpool registering an interest in him a few years ago, however, Chilwell opted to stay with the Foxes and has since developed into a key player.
The youngster has been ever-present for his side this season making 23 appearances in the Premier League as well as making his debut for the senior England national team back in September. Chilwell loves to get forward and help out the attack, completing 1.5 successful dribbles per game, to deliver teasing crosses into the middle. His ability on the ball means he should have no issues slotting seamlessly into Guardiola’s system.
Still improving with every game, moving to the Etihad would be a wise move.
