After scoring an incredible solo goal to win a crucial home game against high-flying Chelsea in Manchester City’s last Premier League outing, Riyad Mahrez’s cult following gathered since bursting onto the scene with Leicester City all those years ago has been in deafening voice.
The Algerian national hero picked the ball up just outside the area before swivelling inside and curling a left-footed shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga for City’s winning strike in their 2-1 comeback.
It was no surprise seeing him do that against Chelsea. He scored a screamer which more or less sealed a second consecutive Premier League title on the final day of the 2018/2019 season against Brighton, showing what he is capable of on his day.
However, with Mahrez’s hugely popular status in his native Algeria, he appears to have steadily garnered a cult following – with a few City supporters discussing the phenomenon on social media.
Here’s what they had to say.

Honestly understood why he didn’t start today.. we need Bernardo to find his form and we need Mahrez for the bigger games through the season.
