Manchester City’s midfield target set to snub January transfer

Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern let out a groan this morning after hearing that a top-class target of theirs is set to turn down a move to the Etihad Stadium.

The Guardian reports that Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic is set to stay in Catalonia until the end of the season at least, despite the Croatian midfielder struggling to earn consistent first-team opportunities.

Despite playing more minutes than any midfielder excluding Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp this season, Rakitic has not played in La Liga for over a month and faces a huge battle for a spot in the first-team, with Barcelona boasting the likes of Andre Gomes, Denis Suarez and Rafinha.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique spoke about the reports after last night’s 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey, stating Rakitic’s absence was nothing to do with a potential transfer:

“Not even 25% of reports are reliable, whether they are from Croatia, Spain or England,”

Whether the situation will change at the end of the season remains to be seen but Rakitic’s contract in Catalonia runs until 2019, although our landlord believes Barcelona could sell this summer.

The City fans by the jukebox here in the Tavern are pretty gutted about this news, and admit they’d love to see Rakitic plying his trade at the Etihad Stadium this year!
