Things have gone from bad to worse for Manchester City after losing to Manchester United and being knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool. Ahead of a crucial trip to Tottenham in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola has some more bad news for Citizens in the Tavern.
The Spaniard has revealed (via Sky Sports) that star striker, Sergio Aguero, will miss the trip to Wembley with a knee injury sustained during the Manchester derby.
The Argentine came off the bench for the Citizens and looked to have been fouled in the area by Ashley Young, but appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears.
Aguero was not fit enough to start in the second-leg defeat to Liverpool after complaining of a pain in his knee.
“He made a huge effort because after the action from Ashley Young against United he has problems in his knee
“He could not train. He played the last 15 or 20 minutes [against Liverpool] and said after the game that he had a lot of pain and could not run,” said Guardiola.
The former Barcelona boss hopes to have Aguero back for their run in and fit for the upcoming World Cup in Russia.
“Hopefully he will be back for our last few games if we need him and especially for his World Cup,” he said.
City require five points from their remaining six fixtures to clinch their third Premier League title and our resident Citizens are gutted about missing on his services for another huge game, having had a rough time of late.
The 29-year-old has been a key performer for the Citizens this season but has played just 40 minutes of football since City beat Chelsea at the start of March. He has hit 21 goals in 22 appearances so far this season, highlighting his importance to the league leaders. Gabriel Jesus will be expected to take the goalscoring burden when they travel to the national stadium tomorrow.
