‘Must be something special’ – Man City fans on Twitter mixed over potential transfer record

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story from Warren Haughton in The Sun, that claims Manchester City are prepared to break another record by paying £6 million for Charlton’s wonderkid, Jeremy Sarmiento. The current record fee paid for a schoolboy is £2.5 million that Chelsea parted with to bring in Exeter’s Ethan Ampadu last year.

Manchester City are one of the richest football teams in the world. The Citizens have the financial pulling power to match any other team, so a £6 million fee for a 15-year-old wouldn’t be a big loss to Sheikh Mansour, who’s piled millions of pounds into the club over the last ten years, with players like Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Kyle Walker all being recruited for £50-million plus in the last couple of seasons.

The Sky Blues have been trying to build their academy system up over the last few years and they’re starting to see results with the likes of Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz and Oleksandr Zinchenko all coming through the system and featuring in the first-team picture this season. Building up Manchester City on the pitch at all levels is obviously a priority of the club’s hierarchy and to make the move to bring in the EFL’s best wonderkid would be a superb boost for both Man City and Jeremy Sarmiento.
