This…is…just…brilliant! No, seriously! I mean it! I’m genuinely excited by this! Maybe the nice weather we’ve been having has gone to my head and given me some stroke, I’m sure there’s a few of you out there who must think I’m insane, and even as I write this I’m not 100% sure whether I’m all there myself.
According to Caughtoffside.com, Newcastle are planning a bid for Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy. Yes, that Craig Bellamy! Obviously, relying on internet based rumours is like buying a bag full of magic beans, so I’m aware that I probably come across as some sort of idiot. But let’s not forget…with magic beans, sometimes you get a beanstalk to the clouds!
Newcastle are said to want Bellamy back after he left under bitter circumstances in 2005. Since then he’s been at Celtic, Blackburn, Liverpool, West Ham, Manchester City and is currently on loan at Cardiff City. Roberto Mancini is apparently keen to see the back of him, and the £7 million price tag City have set doesn’t seem to have put Mike Ashley off signing the Welsh striker.
£7 million might seem a lot for a 31 year old currently plying his trade in the Championship, but let’s have a think about this. Gobby, moody, aggressive, nasty…Bellamy has been described as one or all of these in his career. Lazy, over-rated, useless….he’s NEVER been tarred with any of those descriptions.
The last time he was at Newcastle, Bellamy scored 43 goals in 119 starts, including a memorable brace against Feyenoord which put the Toon into the Champions League knock-out stages after it looked like they might suffer an early exit in 2002. He was quick, sharp and had an eye for goal which made his subsequent replacements, Owen, Martins, Luque and (God help us) Sibierski look amateurish by comparison. Though to be fair, it wouldn’t have taken much.
I believe £7 million is a steal, and I for one would love to see a more mature and professional Bellamy back at St. James. Sir Bobby Robson was a massive fan. He famously said ‘I handled Bellamy for four years. Graeme Souness couldn’t stick four months.’ A lot of what he got up to at Newcastle was unacceptable, and it was topped off when he sent a gloating text to Alan Shearer which caused a lot of bad blood between the two.
As I say, it’s an internet based rumour but I can’t see how Craig Bellamy moving to Newcastle would hurt either party. We need a proven striker, and he knows the club well. He’s even played with Ameobi and Harper! I don’t speak for all Newcastle fans, but I would ask that any who disagree with me to make themselves known in the comment box.
If you can think of a decent reason why we shouldn’t get excited about having Bellamy back, I’d love to hear it!
