What a momentous day in the Transfer Tavern for those in to enjoy a fry up. Today, the Pep Guardiola era in the Premier League began.
As confirmed by Manchester City’s official website, the club have signed Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on a four-year deal and the German becomes the first signing under the stewardship of the Spaniard.
Despite breaking his kneecap and being ruled out of Euro 2016, City had ramped up efforts to sign him recently as he entered the final year of his deal at Signal Iduna Park.
A wonderful passer of the ball and able to operate either in a holding role or further up the field, the 25-year old appears to fit the Guardiola style of play down to a tee and will certainly freshen up the engine room.
In the past, he has been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Juventus and Barcelona after becoming a stalwart of the hugely impressive Dortmund side that battled Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.
“I’m thrilled to have signed for Manchester City,” roared the German international upon his signing.
“When I learned of City’s interest my heart was set on coming here and things have moved very quickly.
“I have loved my time with Borussia Dortmund and I would like to thank the club and the supporters for the five very happy years I spent there.
“Now I have a new challenge and that is to achieve great things with City. The opportunity to work with a coach like Pep Guardiola is something I am really looking forward to and I am flattered to be the first signing the Club has made this summer.
“I can promise the City fans I will give everything to help us win titles both in England and the Champions League. These are exciting times.”
How big a signing is this for Man City? Can he prove to be the difference?
