Man City are a side that play free-flowing, attacking football, and so it’s no real surprise that the fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to hear about any potential offensive additions.
However, Pep Guardiola clearly values the other side of the game – the defensive side – just as highly, as reports from the Guardian over the last few days have indicated that the Spaniard is considering making a move for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.
De Ligt, who is rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt, has enjoyed a very solid few years at Ajax since moving to the club in 2016, making over 40 appearances for the club in the process.
Clearly, then, Guardiola has been impressed – and the Man City faithful seemingly have been too.
We recently asked fans whether the club should look to sign the Dutchman, and the majority of fans responded positively to the idea. 64% of those polled voted in favour of a move, whilst just 36% of fans were against it.
Man City’s attack is sensational, but their options at the back are more limited. Particularly if Guardiola looks to utilise a five-man defence, bringing in an extra central defender or two could be what they need, and de Ligt certainly has the quality to compete.
At just 18-years-old, the youngster clearly has bags and bags of potential, and Guardiola could well be the best man in Europe to bring the best out of him.
