Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over struggling Newcastle at the weekend.

With Leroy Sane on the bench again, the Citizens took the lead after just eight minutes with Raheem Sterling curling home a wonderful effort. However, the Magpies struck back through DeAndre Yedlin to level the score before half-time. City needed a moment of magic to come away with three points as Kyle Walker smashed home his first goal for the club to ensure the Citizens kept pace with Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Guardiola made just one major signing in the summer and is expected to return to the transfer market when the window reopens in January. Top of the Spaniard’s shortlist is a new defensive midfielder to add competition for Fernandinho in the engine room. City had targeted Jorginho who instead opted to join Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea.

Instead, City should attempt to sign Juventus lynchpin – Sami Khedira. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the German has been a key player for the Old Lady since joining from Real Madrid on a free transfer back in 2015. Khedira has lifted three Italian league titles during his time at the club, adding to the World Cup and Champions League winners medals he already has in his trophy cabinet. However, the 31-year-old has less than one year on his current deal and will be free to negotiate with clubs in January if no extension is agreed.

Khedira made 28 appearances in the Serie A last season, helping his side’s cause with a fantastic return of nine goals from centre midfield. He is an extremely well-rounded midfield, capable of both attacking and defending at the highest level. His experience will also be vital as City look to finally secure their first Champions League crown.

Potentially available at a great price, landing Khedira would be a real coup for Guardiola.
