In a must win game for Manchester City our champions league dreams were left all but impossible thanks to a lacklustre performance at the Amsterdam arena. The future looks bright for the Ajax youngsters as they showed they can tame even the biggest threats in European football. As for Mancini, a total regroup and re-think is needed.
Hart: 7 The England number 1 has been City’s lifeline so far in the Champions League and he will feel very disappointed about conceding three goals. In truth he was left helpless in all occasions through defensive errors and clinical striking.
Richards: 7 Tidy defensively in both formations Mancini tinkered with, although he had a fairly quiet night with the majority of Ajax’s play coming from down the right. He also played a superb ball to Milner to set up Nasri’s goal.
Kompany: 6 Defensively he looked sharp and aggressive and managed to deal with a lot Ajax’s passing. However as a leader and organiser he was very poor and failed to collectively protect Hart as much as needed.
Lescott: 6 The England International dealt with Ajax’s long ball very comfortably and towered over De Jong. He was however slightly less comfortable with Ajax’s passing play and he was the defender that made way for Mancini’s formation mistake.
Clichy: 6 Had a very busy night with Sana and the overlapping right back as Ajax’s main threat. With 4 at the back he looked solid and capable of dealing with the threat but was confused on his position when they switched to 3. Ultimately got the touch that sent the 3rd goal past Hart.
Barry: 5 He looked lost without Silva and gave away a lot of possession in the middle of the park. He also failed to cope with Erikson who largely dictated play and gave a master lass performance. Barry will also be disappointed that he played a role in two of Ajax’s goals.
Toure: 6 Very quite by his usual dominant standards and was out numbered in midfield. The Ivorian was unable to protect his defenders or make any of his surging runs that he has become famed for.
Milner: 6 Started the night in as holding midfield and was pushed further forward swapping roles with Yaya Toure, and ended as a winger before being Taken off for Tevez. He worked hard without the ball but failed to provide any attacking threat.
Nasri: 8 The Frenchman still looks far from his best and was unable to show the spark that was missing in the City midfield. However, off the ball he put in a real shift and showed great technique with the opening goal.
Aguero: 6 He was making good runs all night behind the full backs, but was unable to get the delivery he wanted and definitely missed Silva. He was feeding on scraps mainly and wasn’t able to effect the game to City’s benefit.
Dzeko: 6 The in-form striker finally got his wish and was starting a game but was unable to capture the form of late. He was a focal point for City but not much more as he couldn’t get the support from the midfielders. He’ll feel disappointed that he didn’t at least get one goal though with 2 decent chances.
