Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team all but seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 4-0 win over Basel in the first leg of their last 16 encounter on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men went into their clash with the Swiss champions off the back of thumping Leicester City 5-1 in their previous Premier League match, a result which moved the Citizens 16 points clear at the summit of the division. And the North West outfit took a step closer to Champions League glory on Tuesday night as a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and strikes from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero secured a comprehensive victory for Guardiola’s side, all but booking their spot in the last eight of Europe’s elite competition.
Subsequently, there have been many thrilled City fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about what their side could go on to achieve this season, both domestically and on the European stage.
And with the title all but wrapped up, several of our resident Citizens supporters are already thinking about the summer transfer window, and what business their team could look to do to maintain their dominance of English football next season.
And one man they feel the club have to get rid off this summer is goalkeeper Joe Hart, who clearly hasn’t got a future at the Etihad Stadium, and as such should be given the permanent move he deserves to continue and ultimately resurrect his career.
Undoubtedly, the 30-year-old has been a great servant to the North West club since his move there back in 2006, with the England international going on to make 348 appearances for the Citizens, helping them to win two Premier League titles in 2012 and 2014.
His efforts between the sticks, especially in those title-winning campaigns, should not be forgotten by the City faithful – he played a huge part in both seasons – but time is evidently up on his career at the Etihad, hence the successive loan spells at first Torino and now West Ham.
Guardiola made it clear immediately that Hart was not the goalkeeper he wanted at the club, and while Claudio Bravo did little to vindicate his decision, Ederson certainly has.
But instead of farming him out on loan again next season, with Hart reportedly willing to move to Europe once more, the Citizens should seek to cash in on him, not only to at least get a fee for his services, but to give him the permanent move to finally end uncertainty surrounding his future.
It can’t be particularly easy going somewhere on loan for the season with the knowledge that a permanent move at the end of it is unlikely – many people may well have forgotten that Hart remains on the books at City.
But the North West outfit should honour his commitment and the pivotal role he played in their success by giving him a permanent move this summer, thus providing him with the stability to go about resurrecting his career as opposed to another year on loan and the uncertainty that comes with it. The Citizens may also get a healthy fee for his services as well.
As such, City should look at the best interests of both themselves and indeed the player by cashing on the £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) so he can get on with his career, and they can at least get something for his services.
