Manchester City’s long-term transfer hopes all but over

4358447He has just become the all-time leading goalscorer at Barcelona, and now we in the Football Transfer Tavern are not at all shocked by the latest claim to reach the bar.

The Daily Telegraph report that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has claimed he wants to stay at the club for the rest of his career.

The Argentine forward is undoubtedly one of the best players of all-time, and now it seems that we will not get the pleasure of watching him on our shores week in, week out, no matter how much money Manchester City throw at him.

The Citizens who are Premier League title favourites, have been linked with an audacious swoop for the Argentine, and now it seems that Messi has moved to disappoint the Citizens once and for all.

He claimed: “I intend to retire here at Barcelona. As long as people want me, I will stay, I am happy here.

“I am very proud at being in the history of such an important and big club.

“The important thing is that this team keeps on making history, this group has been doing wonderful things, winning everything, and deserves to keep on doing important things.”

As one of our punters notes over a game of pool, Messi is only 26-years-old, and has plenty more left to give – plenty more goals to score and titles to win – although sadly not for City!

Will Messi stay true to his word? Is there simply no way he will leave his beloved Barca at sime point in the future? Let us know your thoughts below.
