Here at the Football Transfer Tavern, we have the utmost respect for Rio Ferdinand after his glorious 11-year spell at Old Trafford where he has collected an incredible 13 trophies.
However, the 34-year-old’s future is unsure with his current contract set to expire in the summer and he has yet to sign a new deal despite Sir Alex Ferguson holding talks with the former Leeds United defender.
But Ferguson is confident that the classy centre back will remain with the club, and told Mirror Football: “I’ve spoken to him and, obviously at this moment in time, he’s more concerned about getting an opponent for his testimonial game!
“He is working on that, but we want him to stay and obviously I am sure his representatives will be discussing things with David [Gill].
“I would imagine that [staying] would be the best thing for him.”
Ferdinand has actually played more games for United than any other centre back this term and after a few inconsistent seasons has been in fine form with the league leaders set to be confirmed as champions tonight with victory against Aston Villa.
United are also keen to tie Javier Hernandez down on a longer deal and Ferguson has confirmed that he has a long-term future at the club despite only two Premier League appearances since January.
Will Ferdinand extend his stay at Old Trafford? Let us know your thoughts below.
