Manchester United almost signed Manchester City captain

Vincent Kompany A tasty little rumour has been whispered around the Transfer Tavern today, which suggests that Manchester United could have beaten Manchester City to their captain a decade ago.

We’re used to the odd punter sobbing at the bar about the one that got away and The Mirror runs with a similar rumour today, stating that Sir Alex Ferguson was looking to buy Vincent Kompany way back in 2004.

The story claims Ferguson had drafted a four-man shortlist to improve his central defence which consisted of Kompany, Phillippe Mexes, Gabriel Heinze and Gerard Pique; with the latter duo actually arriving from the continent.

Although Pique is now a favoured pick for best central-defender in many of the debates we hear blurted out throughout the tavern, his time in Manchester wasn’t great and he eventually returned to sunny Catalonia.

Had Kompany moved to Old Trafford instead of the Spaniard a decade ago then the past few years of football history would have been a lot different- and the Manchester City fans at the bar daren’t even contemplate the idea of their leading Belgian lining up in United’s red jersey!
