Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are happy that Louis van Gaal has turned his attention away from a move for Kevin Strootman after the Mirror revealed he is interested in Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender.
There have been recent question marks raised over Strootman’s fitness due to the reoccurrence of his knee problem at Roma.
And now it looks like once and for all van Gaal has drawn a line under his interest for the Dutch midfielder as he now looks to Bender.
The publications suggests that the Red Devils will face a battle for Bender, with Arsenal also monitoring the situation of the German defensive midfielder.
Despite defensive reinforcements being at the top of United’s list heading into the summer, they are also clearly missing a world-class centre midfielder.
And after months of speculating Strootman’s arrival, it now looks as though the next name on everyone’s lips will be Leverkusen’s man.
Although United have money to burn, they would save so much money, with Strootman’s price tag being in the region of £50m, Bender will only cost just over £10m.
So there are clear pros and cons to the situation but with Strootman breaking down injured again last month, van Gaal has a big decision to make.
