Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern have sat up following the latest update on Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic from The Express
The paper reports that Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg have pulled out of the race for the Croatian striker leaving Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea to fight among themselves for his services.
Mandzukic was strongly linked with a move back to the club whom he joined Bayern in 2012 but Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs has confirmed they are not interested in recruiting him at the end of the season.
“A transfer for Mario Mandzukic is unlikely,” Allofs said.
“We will be able to just do a few things and we won’t be able to pay every transfer fee. Of course, we have a good squad and we want to get better.
“It’s a fact we are trying to find a striker that is able to help us a lot up front, there is no doubt about it.”
The summer arrival of Robert Lewandowski from rivals Borussia Dortmund has brought about suggestions that the 27-year-old will look for a fresh start with a move to the Premier League on the agenda.
Man United boss David Moyes demonstrated interest in Mandzukic while manager of Everton and he could revive his interest at Old Trafford. While Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to be tracking him ahead of a busy summer in the transfer market.
