Manchester United and Arsenal target postpones contract talks

There’s a few whispers around the Football Transfer Tavern today that highly rated Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes might be heading to England in the summer.

talkSPORT report that the 24-year-old German international has postponed contract talks with the Bundesliga club until the end of the season at least.

This is likely to bring about interest from a number of Premier League sides including Manchester United and Arsenal while Liverpool have also been linked to a move in the past with the 6 ft 2 physical centre back.

The Schalke captain has spent his entire career at the club and after recent improvement he is now rated as one of the finest defenders in the Bundesliga along with the likes of Mats Hummels at Borussia Dortmund.

His current contract does not expire until 2014 and his club were keen to get him to extend his deal. However initial discussions failed to find a resolution and they have now been put on hold until the summer.

According to reports, this may see the German side becoming more likely to cash in on the talented centre back in the near future with English clubs set to pounce.
