Manchester United: Anthony Martial expected to miss Saints clash

Anthony Martial is expected to miss Manchester United’s trip to Southampton this weekend, after picking up a thigh strain in the club’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, via The Guardian.

Premiership Picks

The 23-year-old France international has started the campaign brightly for United and found the net against Wolves last week, but will now likely miss the forthcoming trip to St Mary’s as he recovers from a thigh problem he sustained against the Eagles.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will also be without left-back Luke Shaw this weekend, who is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

Shaw, who was brought off after just 34 minutes on Saturday and replaced by Ashley Young, will miss at least five weeks of action with his latest set-back – per The Guardian’s report – which is a huge blow for United as they look to rectify last weekend’s disappointing defeat against Palace.

With Diego Dalot also injured, Solskjaer will likely play either Ashley Young or forgotten man Marcos Rojo at left-back until Shaw makes a full recovery. Rojo had been rumoured to be leaving the club before the European transfer window closes next Monday, but those plans could now be scuppered due to Shaw’s current situation.

With regards to Martial, the extent of his injury has yet to be confirmed, though it is more than likely he will be a notable absentee against Southampton this weekend.

If it is thought to be serious, though, it could leave Solskjaer in quite the predicament with Alexis Sanchez closing in on a move to Inter Milan (via Sky Sports). United are already extremely thin on the ground in the attacking areas following the departure of Romelu Lukaku, so Martial’s injury is a huge setback.
