Manchester United and Arsenal fans have hardly had the best couple of weeks, and things have taken a downward turn once more as news from The Express reaches the Football Transfer Tavern.
The reports are claiming that top transfer target Ilkay Gundogan is set to be offered a new contract by Borussia Dortmund.
Both Premier League clubs have been long-term admirers of the German international, who has been missing since August with a back injury.
Gundogan has also attracted interest from Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, as he is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract.
But Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed that he hopes to tie the 23-year-old down to a new long-term contract, before the summer’s World Cup.
Watzke said: “Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad we want to keep at our club.
“We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it.
“And we are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply.”
The news is set to come as a blow to Manchester United especially, with Red Devils manager David Moyes already having missed out on a host of top midfield targets since arriving at the club last summer.
If Gundogan is off limits this summer, who should the Red Devils and Gunners turn to instead? Let us know your thoughts below.
