Interesting reports have emerged in the Football Transfer Tavern today as Everton manager Roberto Martinez reveals to BBC Sport that the release clause in Manchester United and Arsenal target Marouane Fellaini expired on 31 July.
The Merseyside club had previously refused to confirm reports on the deadline in the contract where a £22 million bid from a Champions League side could trigger a deal for the Belgian international.
However Martinez has now admitted that he celebrated the deadline passing last month.
Martinez said: “As you can imagine, for a manager that gives you a real sense of celebration when that day arrives.”
Fellaini, who joined Everton in a £15 million move from Standard Liege, signed an extension to his contract at Goodison Park in November which should see him remaining with the club until the summer of 2016.
Former Toffees manager David Moyes has been strongly linked with a reunion at Old Trafford with the powerful midfielder but Everton have confirmed that they have not receievd any bids for the 25-year-old.
Martinez said: “I don’t think I am giving away anything that nobody knows. It’s well documented that Marouane’s contract has a clause – that clause expired on 31 July.”
Martinez added: “We are focussing on the league. You are not going to stop the speculation; if there are any players coming in or going out the fans will be the first to know.
“But we are in a position where I don’t mind to have other clubs looking at my players because that means they are doing good things.”
