The Manchester Evening News have nothing short of a sensational claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern today as they note that Manchester United are back in the race for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The forward, who is simply one of the best players in the world – if not the best – and an Old Trafford legend has often expressed his love for United and during the Champions League ties this season between then Fergie’s United and Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, Ronaldo was obvious in his affection for the club. Now it seems that United and David Moyes are confident that they can land the player in a deal worth £80 million. Of course as one of our punters quips, quite a lot of this may hinge on Florentino Perez’s chasing of Gareth Bale -Real Madrid cannot sell Ronaldo before they get in another player of a similar quality and whilst Bale may not be quite there yet, he certainly has the potential to be.
United are still in Ronaldo’s heart and at the minute contract talks between the forward and Real Madrid are ongoing but not making much progress. It seems to be that United believe that they can land Ronaldo especially if they end up selling Wayne Rooney and also miss out on Cesc Fabregas, whilst Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti feel that the prolific goal scorer will remain with Los Blancos. Jose Mourinho even weighed in and noted he felt Ronaldo would remain at Real Madrid – quite how much of that claim was mind games however remains to be seen.
