Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, there seems to be some bad news for Manchester United fans courtesy of Metro.
The publication claim that Fabio Coentrao will be remaining in Spain this winter.
The Real Madrid defender has been linked with a move to Manchester United last summer and as our landlord reminds us, it was a deadline day deal that was so close to going through, only to fall at the last minute.
United are now on the hunt for another left back and are keen to bring Coentrao in after deciding that the chase for Everton’s Leighton Baines would prove too costly and time consuming.
However, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that he is not interested in allowing any of his players to leave in the winter and will not be bringing anyone in ether.
“No players are leaving and we’re not going to sign anyone,” he said. “The window is closed for us.”
That is of course hardly ideal news for Arsenal, who are also keen on a player from the Spanish giants, with Alvaro Morata interesting Arsene Wenger, especially after the injuries to his forwards, the latest of whom is Theo Walcott.
Manchester United will now be forced to look elsewhere, but as one of our punters notes, they could well return in the summer.
Manchester United fans. Did you want Coentrao anyway or are Luke Shaw and Leighton Baines better alternatives? Let us know your thoughts below.
