There is some interesting reports breaking in the Football Transfer Tavern today.
Mail Online suggest that Benfica centre back and long-term Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay has now claimed that new Old Trafford boss David Moyes denied him the chance to join the club in a £18 million move.
It was well known that former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had been tracking the Argentina international with a view to bringing the 27-year-old to Manchester and now the player says a deal was close to completion when the Scot decided to retire at the end of last season.
However former Everton coach Moyes baulked at the asking price which was overinflated with Benfica having to give some of the funds to Garay’s ex-club Real Madrid.
“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer,” he said. “The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.
“I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that’s not a problem.
“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it’s never possible to discard anything in the future.’
It now looks unlikely that United will land the classy defender and instead Garay could end up playing for Madrid’s great rivals Barcelona as they seek a replacement for club legend Carles Puyol.
Will Moyes regret blocking a move for the Argentine defender? Let us know your thoughts below.
