Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has given the green light for the club to spend in the January transfer window, according to Metro.
The Red Devils have had a poor start to the season; they sit 10th in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening 11 league games.
Two of those wins came against teams that sit above them in the table, beating both Chelsea and Leicester at Old Trafford in the opening weeks of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been desperately short of goals; they’ve only put the ball in the net 13 times in 11 Premier League games.
United’s lack of goals is less surprising given the fact they sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in the summer.
Lukaku, 26, scored 16 Premier League goals in his first campaign at United, and got 12 more last year despite multiple injury layoffs.
The club did not reinvest the funds they received for their most consistent goalscorer, leaving the burden on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Solskjaer and Woodward look keen to put that right, with the report from Metro claiming the £73m received for Lukaku will go towards January deals – Juventus veteran Mario Mandzukic is at the top of the list.
Mandzukic, 33, hasn’t featured for the Old Lady thus far this season, and was heavily linked to United in the summer.
The 6 ft 3 in Croatian’s aerial presence could offer the Red Devils a plan B, offering something far different to Rashford, Martial and Daniel James.
The club has also been linked to Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, but clubs may be reluctant to sell their star assets in the January window.
Is this the worst Manchester United team in the Premier League era?
