There’s some spilled peanuts in the Football Transfer Tavern today as Paul Brown from the Daily Star claims that Manchester United are still interested in signing Chelsea’s Juan Mata this month.
The Blues will have no business in selling the attacking midfielder to their Premier League rivals but that hasn’t stopped Brown declaring that an offer of around £27 million could be enough to tempt Chelsea to sell.
It’s certainly an audacious rumour but with the 25-year-old reportedly unhappy with his lack of first team football at Stamford Bridge perhaps it would be a possible transfer the Spanish international would consider.
The World Cup and European Championship winner is now firmly behind Brazilian starlet Oscar in the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, having just started 11 of their 20 Premier League matches.
United would clearly have some interest in Mata, who wants more regular football in a World Cup year as Moyes seeks more creativity in his underperforming side but we doubt if Chelsea would even consider any offers for their rivals.
Here in the tavern, the only way we can see this transfer working for Jose Mourinho is if Manchester United agree to sell long-term target Wayne Rooney to Chelsea.
The England international only has 18 months left on his contract at Old Trafford and following their decline it remains to be seen if he wants to stay with the Premier League champions. Including Mata as part of any deal could be the sweetener United require to let their star leave.
