Sensational does describe today’s story from the Daily Mail who believe that Manchester United are plotting an audacious January swoop for Barcelona midfielder Andres Ineista.
The news has been met with shock across the Football Transfer Tavern as John Edwards from the paper arrives to explain the possible transfer to wide eyed punters at the bar.
Edwards explains that the Spanish international’s current contract impasse with the Camp Nou club continues and that has brought about interest from Old Trafford as David Moyes seeks a top quality midfielder for his side.
Punters remember that Moyes tried to recruit Iniesta’s team-mate Cesc Fabregas during the summer but he was left disappointed as the former Arsenal man decided to remain in Spain instead.
However this shock targeting of the 29-year-old, who is regarded as one of the finest ever creative midfielders, seems unthinkable to most in the tavern and could surpass all before him in the Premier League.
He is contracted to the La Liga champions until 2015 but with no agreement in sight and some misgivings over the club he has played for his entire career, the time could be right for a move away from the Catalan club.
We think it’s best to take this rumour with a pinch of salt but the story has given hope to United supporters in the bar that this could be a winter window to remember at Old Trafford.
Is there any hint of truth in this rumour or is it simply a case of media hype? Let us know your thoughts below.
