Manchester United face battle for highly-rated defensive target

MustafiManchester United fans watching their demoralising defeat to Arsenal on Sunday quickly addressed the need for defensive recruits in January, a topic of conversation that has continued into the week.

One name hot on many fan’s lips is Valencia’s German international Shkodran Mustafi but The Daily Star indicates the Red Devils face a stern test luring their target to Old Trafford.

La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have also been linked with Mustafi, whilst AS states Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich are the latest European super-club to declare their intentions of capturing the defender.

Reports claim United had an offer for Mustafi turned down over the summer, whilst suggesting Valencia are prepared to sell the German for under his release clause; with £22m the required price for the defender.

Mustafi, a former youngster at Everton, as gone from strength-to-strength since leaving Goodison Park; with his journey taking him to the Spanish side via Serie A outfit Sampdoria.
