Manchester United face Spanish battle to land £20m ace

Mats Hummels

Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been pretty happy with their club’s transfer business thus far, but one punter admits his concern at the fact the club are yet to bring in a new centre back.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic bringing the curtain down on their glittering United careers this summer, a new top class centre back is seen as a priority signing for new Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.

Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels has been mentioned as a possible target, but sources at The Express reckon United now face a battle for his signature with Catalan giants Barcelona.

Reports last week suggested United were ready to submit a £20 million offer for the former Bayern Munich defender, and reports in Spain suggest Barcelona have now joined the race.

New Barca boss Luis Enirque has already been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic, Real Sociedad’s Claudio Bravo and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, whilst a deal for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez is imminent.

Enrique’s next priority is looking to replace club legend Carles Puyol who retired at the end of the season, and the German World Cup star has been identified as the man to do just that.

However, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is set to fight the La Liga giants tooth and nail to get his man.

Manchester United fans. Is Hummels the man you would like to see replace Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford? Let us know your thoughts below.
