Edwin van der Sar is a club legend at Manchester United.

The Dutch goalkeeper was an ever-present member of the squad which were so successful under Sir Alex Ferguson during the mid-to-late 00s, winning the Premier League three years on the spin between the years of 2006-2009.

Van der Sar made over 250 appearances for the Red Devils throughout his career, winning no more than seven major honours with the club, which included four league titles, two League Cups and the Champions League in 2008. For this, he will always be welcome at Old Trafford.

The 48-year-old is currently chief executive at Ajax but has admitted that he would relish an opportunity to return to his former club, though the idea of becoming United’s director of football isn’t something he is currently interested in.

“I am a chief executive – and that is a very different role to director of football,” said Van der Sar, via the Metro.

United are currently holding off employing a director of football after months of searching, with the Metro claiming Van der Sar topped their list of candidates to fill the position.

“Of course I am interested in a position at United. But I think I need to learn a little bit more about myself as a chief executive at Ajax and develop myself even further. ‘United is a fantastic club. So let’s see what the future brings.”
