Manchester United fans are looking more than a little bit confused this morning in the Football Transfer Tavern, as Metro report that they missed out on a seemingly nailed on last gasp swoop.
It seems that despite initial reports stating they had netted Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao on a season long loan, the deal was not finalised in time, thus meaning it couldn’t go through.
The Portuguese full back had been thought to be subject to a very, very last gasp move to Old Trafford, with David Moyes finally giving up on his pursuit of Leighton Baines and realising that another left back needed to be brought in.
Coentrao for his part has been on the cusp of an exit from the Bernabeu all summer long and given Carlo Ancelotti prefers Marcelo to him, it is not really so surprising that he looked to earn a move where he would at least get some playing time this World Cup year.
Sadly for United fans, it seems that despite previous claims laste last night that Coentrao was now a United player on a season long loan, La Liga sources have denied this, and it is thought that due to Real losing out to Benfica in the race to land Granada’s Guilherme Siqueira, Real Madrid desperately kept Coentrao at the club – providing cover at left back.
As one of our punters quips, new £85.3 million man Gareth Bale originally started off as a left back but we can’t imagine Ancelotti will be playing him in his previous position this season!
Manchester United fans. With just Fellaini, Zaha and Varela as new boys, did Moyes do enough this transfer window? Let us know your thoughts below.
