The Brazilian, who featured sporadically for United last term following his £52m transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer, hasn’t featured for the Red Devils in any of their opening three league fixtures.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move to Fiorentina last week, though it has now emerged that he is not interested in a move away and is keen to fight for his place in United’s midfield this season.

Fred is one of five senior central midfielders at United following the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera this year, but has so far been overlooked in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI, with the Norwegian preferring to partner 22-year-old Scott McTominay alongside Paul Pogba in the heart of midfield.

Instead of becoming disheartened, though, the Brazil international has enlisted additional help to get his fitness up to scratch, in preparation for when he is introduced to the fold this season.

According to the MEN, The ex-Internacional man has been putting in extra hours with Professor LC Cameron of the Laboratory of Protein Biochemistry in Rio de Janeiro to help break back into the first-team at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was impressed by Fred’s performance against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League comeback at the Parc des Princes – calling it a “breakthrough” – so knows that there is definitely plenty of potential to work on with the 5ft 7 midfielder.

The United boss also said that he believes Fred “is going to have a big season” this time out, prior to the club’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, highlighting that he will have an instrumental part to play for the club this term. If he continues to put in the extra work in training, it’s likely he’ll be introduced sooner rather than later.
