Metro have given Manchester United fans rather an unpleasant shock today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Manchester United have finally given up in their chase for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas.
David Moyes has been chasing the former Arsenal captain all summer long and it now seems that after having several bids for the player rejected, he has finally given up on landing the Spanish international.
Only a day after we were discussing the fact that Fabregas could well still make the decision to leave Gerardo Martino’s men and move to Old Trafford, Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta noted: “Manchester United are interested in the player, but it’s also true that they understand our position of not wanting to sell. They have renounced his signing.
“We aren’t going to sell him. He has a contract with us.
“We count on Cesc. I said that on the day of the presentation of Tito (Vilanova) and also with Tata (new coach Gerardo Martino): He’s an extraordinary player who creates and finishes chances.”
He also showed off his fantastic observational skills and concluded by noting that: “We are delighted with him. He’s the number four of Barca.”
This of course means that Moyes will now have to look for other signings and as one of our punters reminds us, it was just this week the manager was telling us how he still planned to spend big this summer. The question of just who he will spend his money on is now the one on everyone’s lips.
Is this really the end of Manchester United’s pursuit of Fabregas? Let us know your thoughts below.
