Manchester United fans feel a bit better about life in the Football Transfer Tavern, after watching their side rack up a fourth consecutive away victory in the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Newcastle United yesterday.
And sources at the Daily Star reckons the supporters have another reason to be optimistic, with the club reportedly being handed a boost in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund playmaker Ilkay Gundogan.
David Moyes had earmarked the 23-year-old as a top transfer target for the summer, but had resigned himself to losing out on his signature to Barcelona.
However, now the Premier League’s reigning champions feel confident they can complete the deal, following the recent transfer ban imposed on the Catalan giants.
Gundogan has just a year to run on his current Dortmund contract, and the club are understood to have offered a new deal.
However, reports suggest the German international – who has missed the majority of the season with a back injury – is still looking to leave the club this summer.
Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad (who) we want to keep at our club.
“We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it.
“We are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply.”
The German is valued at around £25 million, although his value is likely to drop as he nears closer to the end of his contract.
