It’s another busy Saturday in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Premier League makes a welcome return. Manchester United fans are warming up for tomorrow’s match against Cardiff when speculation emerges about a reported Red Devils transfer target.
The Daily Star reports that United could now face transfer battle with Napoli for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay.
Garay has been a long-term target for the Old Trafford outfit, and since the appointment of David Moyes in the summer several scouts have been to watch the 27-year-old Argentinean star. It is believed that the stylish centre-back has been outlined as the long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand, who could depart the club in the summer as his contract expires.
However the latest rumours suggests that former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is planning to rival Moyes in his chase for the £17-million valued defender.
Benitez is looking to strengthen his side Napoli during January and wants to add a strong, powerful defender to his ranks.
This potential competition could see United stepping up their pursuit for Garay in the upcoming transfer window to ensure that he doesn’t end up in Naples instead.
Garay himself has reportedly revealed that he would like to join Moyes’ side as they remain one of the biggest in world football and now punters in the bar are hopeful that United can secure the talented defender.
Another possible target for Moyes is Valencia midfielder Ever Banega, but the club will have to wait until the summer to sign the fellow Argentine international.
Would Garay fit the bill as United look to replace Rio in the near future? Let us know your thoughts below.
